My Writing
Augusta Louise

Synopsis:
Twelve-year-old Gussie investigates the leftovers of a half-eaten rabbit while out walking with her older sister, Savannah.

Preoccupied with the colour vermillion, finding something for show and tell and asking painful questions about the fiery death of their parents, Gussie strives to suppress an agonizing secret.

She carries matches in her pockets.

The two recently orphaned girls are cared for by a middle-aged aunt and uncle, simple country folk who are much more comfortable tending cows and chickens. Despite their well-meant care and attention, Gussie fights being branded an orphan, just as a wild horse fights against the bit forced into its mouth. Crazy Aunt Molly, an old lady with purple hair, befriends the younger girl and shares some of her hard-earned wisdom: “Family isn’t just about the blood. It’s about the people that stick to you. Water’s thicker than blood, once you add a pinch of cornstarch to it.”
